| Company Overview: | Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. This staggering statistic resonated deeply with the members of the Total Beauty blog community, many of whom have been personally touched by the disease. So in the spirit of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Total Beauty blog community is hosting a month-long initiative that integrates breast cancer awareness, fundraising and beauty giveaways to engage women in the quest for the cure. |
| Mission: | The Total Beauty blog community is hosting daily giveaways that require entrants to answer breast cancer trivia, making the contests educational and fun. Giveaways will also be hosted on Total Beauty - Total Cure pages on Facebook and MySpace. Become a “friend” of the page to be entered in a drawing to win some beauty booty! Total Beauty - Total Cure is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection, and arming women with the knowledge and resources to bring us one step closer to a world without breast cancer. Visit http://www.totalbeauty.com/blogger_ Did You Know: • An estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States during 2008. • About 1,990 men in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed non-skin cancer in women. • An estimated 40,930 breast cancer deaths (40,480 women and 450 men) are expected in 2008. • Breast cancer ranks second among cancer deaths in women (after lung cancer). • At this time, breast cancer cannot be prevented, which is why regular mammograms are so important; they can find breast cancers early, when they are easier to treat. • In addition to finding breast cancer early through mammography, women can actually reduce breast cancer risk by making healthy lifestyle choices - maintain a healthy body weight, engage in regular physical activity and reduce alcohol consumption. • Studies show that early detection, when followed by appropriate treatment, saves lives and increases treatment options. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98 percent among individuals whose cancer has not spread beyond the breast at the time of diagnosis. • Mammography is especially valuable as an early detection tool because it can identify breast cancer at an early stage, usually before physical symptoms develop when the disease is most treatable. The American Cancer Society Recommended Screening Guidelines for Breast Cancer: • Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health. • A clinical breast exam should be part of a periodic health exam, about every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women age 40 and older. • Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care providers. Breast self-exam is an option for women starting in their 20s. |
