Stand Up To Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer

Take a Stand

Attention all members of the Stand & Fans of SU2C: please send us your holiday stories!

Stand Up To Cancer could potentially include them on our website and in our seasonal emails, reminding all of us who have been touched by cancer that we're not alone -- especially at this time of the year.

If you'd like to allow us to use your story, please send us a high-resolution picture along with your data from the Stand, including name and contact information, at stories@standup2cancer.org.

(Your delivery of this material signifies your release based on the SU2C Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.)

The Stand

The Stand is a community experience in which you are invited to share your connection to cancer. One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, but if we stand together to create efficient progress in cancer research, those statistics can change. Well, things are finally settling down again in America. The election's over, so now all eyes are on President-elect Obama - including the eyes of the cancer community. In this commentary from SU2C friend Lance Armstrong, Obama is urged to redouble the government's commitment to fighting cancer now.

As we near the end of an inspiring and historic week in America, I can't help but be excited about all the change and progress our country has seen in the past forty years - and hope that soon we'll see some change in the way our country tackles the issue of healthcare in general and cancer...

I care about this cause. I have lost two grandparents from two different types of cancer in the past two years. My grandma (dad's mom) passed away from pancreatic cancer in August 2006 and my grandpa (mom's dad) passed away September 2008. While my grandpa was going through his treatments my grandma was also diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer. The day my grandpa died my he waited until my mom and grandma got back from a doctor's appointment. My grandma told him that she was going to be okay, and then he let go. my grandpa was a teacher and the most caring person i've ever met.

My grandmother died in 1995 of colon cancer with liver mets. She had been diagnosed in 1940 and 1955 and was resected BOTH TIMES! She died right before I had my first baby. We would lay in her hospital bed rubbing each other's tummy's. Me with a baby and her with tumor's. She often said she did not want to live to see the baby because if she looked in her eyes she would not be able to leave. (She was blind)

My father died on September 10, 2001. He had colon cancer as well, although his cause of death was unknown. Death cert. said resp. failure. He had been on hospice.

Now, my step-dad of 20+ years is battling bladder/prostate and metastatic colon cancer. He has had everything removed and undergoing 6 months of chemo which has been stopped due to a staph infection in his kidney. He has surgery next Thursday.

God bless him and all who are suffering this holiday season.
