FALSE: Bone marrow and stem cell donation is excruciatingly painful and dangerous for a donor.

FALSE: Most people will match a family member.

BOTH FALSE: It is difficult to register as an unrelated donor and you need to donate marrow to be included.

SO FALSE: It is easy to find a match.

TRUE: Television and word of mouth perpetuate these myths.

ALSO TRUE: Time for us to all get the facts so we can take care of our friends and family!

Mission:
To raise awareness about the bone marrow and stem cell donation, and the unrelated registry of donors.

More people of all backgrounds need to learn the facts so they can consider whether or not they want to join the register by making an informed choice, not one based on negative word of mouth and erroneous and overdramatized accounts in the media.

There are not enough people registered, but there are severe shortages of registrants that are Asian, African, Aboriginal, Latino and of mixed ethnic descent.

Over 16 000 people worldwide have an active request for an unrelated match so they can get the transplant that will give them a chance to survive.

I first met Emru when I was around Max's age, maybe a bit older, I'm not too sure, when he worked with my father. My favourite memory of Emru was an encounter we had during the Ice Storm of '98. I went into work with my dad that day (to get out of my mother's hair) and Emru was there. I was aware, even at the age of 10 that Emru was cool. He had comic book things at his desk. For the half-day that I was at the office, I spent 95% of it at his desk. He shared his Sweet Tarts with me and let me play with a Batmobile that he kept on his desk. He never asked me to quiet down as I bombarded him with questions about everything and everything. Even though I have many more memories of Emru, this one is the way that I will always picture him, as the cool guy in the office with the Batmobile.
