| Company Overview: | WHAT IS COCO-ZEN? Coco-Zen is a state of nirvana achieved by surrendering to the taste and aroma of luscious, rich chocolate. It's knowing that you are helping our planet and its people, because here at Coco-Zen we use only organic and Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate in all of our treats. A state of ecstasy, peace and harmony, Coco-Zen is oneness with chocolate. *********************** |
| Mission: | To help build & promote a more planet & people friendly world - one chocolate truffle at a time. *********************** |
| Products: | Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate treats |
At Coco-Zen we believe that all living things are connected – that all our actions not only affect ourselves but also the world around us.
As chocolatiers, we believe that we should not only strive to create the best chocolate treats, but in doing so, consider how we affect those who grow the cocoa and the land from which it comes. As retailers, we try to limit the impact that running a business has on the environment - from packaging, to marketing collateral, to daily office routine.
We believe in oneness with our planet and its people - we believe in a fair and more sustainable way of doing business.

We all love our electronic gadgets - cell phones, iPods, laptops, computers, TVs...and all their nifty accessories and add-ons. However, what many don't think about when purchasing the latest and greatest is that high tech has a huge ecological cost in terms of energy use, resources needed, and disposal. We thought this would be the perfect time to raise this discussion as we head into the holiday season and many of us maybe thinking of "upgrading" our gadgets. |
Facts About Electronics & the Environment
- Electronics are responsible for 25% of home energy use, according to Energy Star.
- The IT industry directly contributes 2% of the U.S.'s overall global warming gases, according to John Solomon of HP.
- 95% of computers in the U.S. simply do not have their built-in power management settings turned on or optimized, according to Intel.
- 20 to 50 million tons of electronics waste (e-waste) is discarded globally every year, according to Greenpeace.
- Only 21% of consumers recycle old electronics, according to TheDailyGreen.

We may not be able to control what goes into our gadgets, but we can control what we do with our gadgets when we're done with them...RECYCLE!
Post from TheDailyGreen:
| If all that e-rubbish were put into containers on a train it would go once around the world! E-waste is the fastest growing component of the municipal solid waste stream, and currently makes up five percent of all municipal solid waste...these days engineers have taken notice that electronics usually contain a wealth of valuable materials. Plus, recycling almost always means lower net carbon emissions, which is something everyone is now paying closer attention to because of global warming. Finally, electronics are made with a sizable amount of lead, cadmium, brominated fire retardants and plastics that can leach toxic breakdown products - that's stuff no one wants in their water supply! |

Adding to the holiday sales of electronics, TV switches to all-digital programming on February 17, 2009.
According to TheDailyGreen:
| That means anyone who does not pay for cable or satellite TV will have to have a DTA (digital-to-analog) converter box, to the tune of 22 million units. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that conventional DTAs could consume more than 3 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) per year and cost $270 million annually in electricity. |
Fortunately, there are DTA convertor boxes that have earned the government's Energy Star rating. According to Energy Star:
