As an ADHD caregiver, what has been your favorite moment of achievement in your child or children with ADHD?
We started our daughter on medication almost a year ago. She was half-way through her second stint in first grade. The teacher kept telling us what a dark and miserable girl she was - how she'd cry if someone tried to joke around with her. We were reluctant at the time to get an ADHD diagnosis because of all the hype. We certainly weren't thinking about putting her on medication. Well, thank goodness we went and received a diagnosis. I'm happy to report that she has a third grade reading level and her math is improving. |
One of my favorite moments was last week my 9 year old daughter came home from school with an academic excellence award. She received straight A's on her report card. Just two years ago she was so far behind and had such horrible ticks they thought she may also have tarets. We are so lucky to have our children attend a school where the staff and teachers care so much about each child as an individual. Thank you to all that have played a roll in my daughters success!! |
My son Austin was diagnosed with ADHD after we struggled through Kindergarten. We have a difficult time with homework and completing task. Our biggest achievement was he made the honor roll 4th quarter in 3rd grade. We had struggled a lot at the beginning of the year. He is in 5th grade now and his behavior is excellent. He still has the completing task issues and is slow with homework, but overall he is hanging in there. He was so proud of an "A" he made on his last social studies test because he usually makes a "D" or "F". |
MY favorite moment was the week we put him on medication, he drew me a picture. He actually sat down and drew a pictue of his family. He has never wanted to sit down and color/draw before. He teachers is even excited about his progress. At PTC she showed a before and after work assignment. |
Yesterday, when I got my daughters report card...1 B and the rest were A's. |
The grading period has come to a close, you’ve reviewed your child’s report card and are preparing for parent-teacher conferences. Some of you may be celebrating the many improvements your child has made, but oftentimes, parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) find this time of year challenging. As an educator for more than 30 years and mother of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who was diagnosed with ADHD at age 9, Deborah Phelps understands the struggles that children with ADHD exhibit in the classroom. Deborah shares her experiences discussing the challenges of ADHD in the classroom and at home and tips to prepare for your next parent-teacher conference.

Insight from ADHD Dad and Psychiatrist, Dr. Edward Hallowell
ADHD Moms is pleased to have a guest contributor this month, Dr. Edward Hallowell, a practicing psychiatrist and founder of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, Mass. Dr. Hallowell is also the best-selling author of “Driven to Distraction,” “Delivered from Distraction” and coming out later this year, “Super Parenting for ADD: An Innovative Approach to Raising Your Distracted Child.” He is father of three children, all whom have been diagnosed with ADHD, and also has ADHD himself.
We’ve asked Dr. Hallowell to share a new perspective with our ADHD Moms community about the roles fathers play in raising a child with ADHD, and how parents can best work together to help their children succeed. You can also hear him speak on this topic in this month's podcast.
